Stacey's Big Job Search 2018

One of my major goals for 2018 is to secure myself a new job. In fact, this is my most important goal for this year. As it stands right now, I work in retail on a 12 hour contract where I'm paid by the hour, and I'm at a point now where I feel desperate to go full time so that I can, well, properly feel like an adult I suppose.

Since I started blogging last year I've really taken to the idea of being a writer. Realistically no company is going to hire me for that purpose. On most job ads for writers the requirements state that applicants should have some kind of degree, which I don't have, and I don't feel like I've been consistent enough with my blog to be able to use it in a job application. Also I've discussed my mental health on here in the past and for as open as I am about it I do wonder what kind of effect that would have if those posts were to be read by a potential employer.

So, for now, I'm mostly looking to progress forward in my retail career.

I had the opportunity to become a store manager some years ago, but during the training it dawned on me just how much I didn't like it, and I didn't want to commit to a job that I knew was going to make me miserable in the long run. I'm quite happy to be the babysitter, but not the parent. So in terms of career progression in retail, where do I go?

Ideally, I would like to go into Visual Merchandising, as that's the part of my current job that I enjoy the most. I started taking pictures of any VM I do about three years ago and I've been trying to build up my portfolio ever since. I even completed a year long course in VM at my local college so that I could get some experience with mannequins and have that as part of my portfolio.

Something that I do struggle with loads is the application process itself. My CV isn't so bad, but I really struggle with cover letters. I guess as a personality I'm generally not comfortable bigging myself up, which is the entire point of the thing. I overthink them and as a result they probably don't turn out as good as they could be.

I've spent the past two weeks since new year saving jobs on Indeed and applying to them. I've also logged back in to LinkedIn to tinker with my profile and I aim to have my VM photos uploaded onto there by the end of the month. Fingers crossed I'll have more success with my job search than I did last year.

Do you have advice for those out there searching for jobs?
